A Day In The Life Of Marketing: Account Manager & Team Leader

Marketing is a growing profession, and there are many avenues and opportunities for individuals wanting to work in the industry. In our next blog series, we will take a closer look at the types of roles within a marketing organisation, and what exactly they do in a day. Here at Social Star, we are passionate about digital marketing, and everything that comes with it, and we hope to inspire you to feel the same.

In this blog post, we interviewed Lily Schultz, account manager and team leader at Social Star, about getting started in the marketing industry whilst studying.

WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO STUDY AND WORK IN MARKETING?

I initially thought I would go into science, as I had attended a science-focused high school, but during my work experience, I realised my true passion. People. I knew I needed a more front-facing job where I interact with others - I am definitely a people person. I chose marketing as the culmination of my three years of retail experience and my desire to help others, and because it left me with endless options for industries and business styles to work in, as every business needs marketing. Despite my change of path from science to marketing, my passion for STEM still exists and I hope to one day work in marketing for a STEM organisation.

WHAT IS THE MOST REWARDING PART OF YOUR JOB?

I love many aspects of my job at Social Star, but I would definitely say that the most rewarding part has been working with clients. Building strong relationships with our clients has been extremely rewarding, and it is a great feeling to know you are valued and trusted to help other individuals achieve their goals and succeed.

WHAT IS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE IN YOUR JOB?

For me, the biggest challenge is not any of the work I do at Social Star, but rather juggling full-time uni and part-time work, whilst still finding time for socialising and looking after my mental health. I am almost finished studying, and after this I will begin working full-time. I’m really looking forward to this change as it will help me to shift my focus onto the job without the added pressure of uni, and will allow me to produce more consistent results in my work.

WHAT DOES A DAY IN YOUR LIFE AT SOCIAL STAR LOOK LIKE?

I complete a variety of task types throughout the day, as I have my own accounts that I manage, as well as a team of marketing coordinators who I oversee. I usually start the day with responding to client and staff emails. The rest of my day consists of meeting with clients to progress their goals, or team members to delegate tasks. I also coordinate several social media accounts and manage the marketing activities for my clients. Having different tasks all the time keeps work engaging and exciting as I am always learning something new.

DO YOU HAVE ANY TIPS FOR STUDENTS WHO WANT TO GET A START IN THE INDUSTRY?

There is never a wrong time to look for work experience. You don’t need to focus on how much experience you have, you just need to put your hand up, show you’re interested and meet any challenges that come your way with a positive attitude and strong work ethic. It doesn’t matter if you’re getting an HD or a Pass, you should always be motivated to find work in your field, whether that is marketing, or something else… It’s always a great time to get more work experience!
